Santa Posters for Little Angels Theatre

If you are not a Christmas fan - look away now!

I was asked to do some work related Christmas themed posters ready for a performance at Little Angels Theatre in North London. I used to be a North Londoner myself briefly so I knew of their great work with puppetry and their community. 

The theme was 1940's, warehouse, vintage but not cutesy

Here are a few used in the show and scroll to the bottom if you want to see a bit of work in progress imagery. 

I began with a colour palette, I often us these so a group of images work well together. The colours are taken directly from photos of the Santa puppet and the colours of the Elves. 

I decided on ink for this project to keep the crisp lines for colouring but wanted a bit of depth with the painted shading. I was going to use the elf standing but felt it cut into the lettering's space. 

Mr Santa was drawn directly from a photo, I'm sure the puppet maker had thought long and hard about his lovely face and wanted to get a true representation. Ahhhh Christmas. 

SCBWI Conference 2016 - Friday and Saturday

18th to 20th November this year I signed up to the SCBWI Conference in Winchester. It was only the second real SCWBI event I have been to since becoming a member. I do attend a writing critique group every month ,which I love, but as an illustrator I was keen on making some connections with other doodlers for the weekend. I took a really small notebook with me, mainly for sketching but the speakers and workshops were pretty great so I have notes from those too. Here is a brief overview.

I really wasn't too sure I should go to the Friday night fringe events. I commuted to the event ,choosing not to stay over in one of Winchesters lovely hotels, so my days were going to be pretty long anyway but I plunged to go and meet people at the Friday Sketch Crawl and after that Nick Cross' Add Character to you Biography workshop. Everyone was very friendly and it was a great way to warm up to the idea of meeting new people. I waved and chatted to some of the very same people all weekend actually. At this point I wish I had signed up for the Friday night crit group/meal thing. It would have been a great opportunity to talk picture books but I had to go home and really start stressing about my portfolio 1 to 1 with Miranda Baker. 

David Almond Key Speaker

After a brief moment of frightened rabbit at everything people said I filed into the main lecture hall to hear David Almond talk about his writing and generally about his ethos on creating. What a dude! seriously - he made me homesick for the Northland and inspired me in every sentence. I could feel the room sigh with thanks when he commented that writing was hard and the stationary was sometimes the best thing about it.

Leigh Hodgkinson Illustration Speaker

Leigh Hodgkinson was such a marvel. After two minutes of looking at her crazy creative process I had jotted down an idea for a picture book and mentally rearranged my house to make space for those clown shoes I was thinking of throwing away. Such an explosive vibe, every project she has been involved in seemed to seamlessly morph into the next. Unashamed to be herself, consistently with her personal and commissioned projects, is my new goal in life. We are often told to find a style, streamline and concentrate but Leigh's idea of making art spans puppets, textiles, film, books, lampshades and sculpture. I felt exhausted and exhilarated at the end of her talk. 

#inktober

So, we are nearly at the end of October or should I call it #inktober. It's the first time I've really joined in and on the whole I've really enjoyed using a list of prompts and ink as my warm up morning exercises.

It's so great to see other peoples work appearing daily too. As a big fan of Instagram it's a great accessible way to meet new inspiring artists or just watch the masters at work.

#colour_collective - it's a Twitter thing

I have really gotten into the colour collective (@clr_collective) community posting on a Friday night at 7.30pm - although being on time at 7.30 is pretty much impossible for me. 

I love all the colour names and some of them really challenge how and where to use that colour. You have to check out the Twitter feed and all the amazing responses to the challenge. Inspiring stuff

Here's a few of my own with varying results but I’m just pleased to be involved.

Hans Christian Andersen Poster work

July was all-full of this Hans Christian Andersen themed poster design I did for a theatre company about to do a production called Timeless Tales. After a few different roughs the clients went for the characters from the stories reading in a row. I really enjoyed putting this together and my sketchbook was full of different ugly ducklings and tin soldiers. 

So a bit of process for you, I drew and re drew the characters and resized them to look good next to one another and then with my light box drew them again. I've been mainly keeping away from my favourite ink at the moment and working with my new set of Inktense pencils - which are fabulous by the way.

Then with the outline to keep the shape I worked on the colour ways - trying to keep a jolly palette and using some pattern to add depth. The eyeless splodges do look a bit creepy but it meant I could alter everything to the last moment.

Got to love that ugly duckling, Quack!
