Aunt and Niece drawings - Dear Lottie

A while ago I was asked to collaborate with the writer of a lovely blog to update her imagery on her site. The sweet blog gives advice from an aunt to a niece and the artwork needed to reflect that connection.

Thinking of all the things I do with my own daughter that give us moments of each other’s personalities was really great. Particularly when she was just learning something or developing her own sense of self when she was little. Those looks of uncertainty she used to give me before she jumped the pool and the happy moments of reading together.

This project has come at a very good time with her now reaching 11 and although her needs are more practical from me she still gives me those "I know you are there looks" and I have to laugh.

Kids eh?

The final pictures were a pleasure to complete in my usual pencil and scanned water colour style with arrangement in Photoshop.

Lo The A to Z

Of Unrequited Love

I started this project many many moons ago. When I was visiting my Parents in the pride lands, as in up north, and inspiration struck mid sentence. 

For a long old while it stayed in the sketchbook and was joined by a series of letters. Of course I had completely worked out all the images (Apart from H, M and Z which are hard)

During the merry month of November I decided i'd release them to my follows on social media as a little Christmas countdown - 25 days, 26 letters GENIUS. 

You lot didn’t get them because although I had done A and B oh and X and Y I hadn’t fully completed any of the others. 

Any who I went on with my plan regardless and quickly every night (or every morning) I edited and created a new image for that day. Some would say what madness! Why not get fully prepared or wait for New Year but Meh - I do love a challenge.

Childrens Book Illustration - Stage 1

This is a project that started earlier this year and one that I’m really excited about. The story is excellent and in rhymes which the long time sufferers of my poetry will know I Love. The writer is great and we get on really well. Like many projects between two artists the details take time to work out so I’m at Stage One. 

Stage one being the part where we have met, looked at the wordage and started to respond to the many aspects and look at the characters. I'm not going to tell you much about the story, its not my story to tell, but I’ll give you a clue on the process ,as I learn myself, to see if it may help anyone else out there who is developing a new idea for print.

So far everything is in sketch form in my workbook or on trace paper, which I tend to use if I need to go over the drawings numerous times. The characters have to look like themselves from every angle and for me drawing something twice, never mind numerous times, requires concentration. I’m not going to say the process is quick, in fact some days you can't tell I’ve moved forward at all, but once I start some locations these characters will be ready to be placed.
